MUNI Gestapo: Thanks for the ticket!
Dear MUNI,
I'm a loyal tax paying and bus riding citizen. I don't hop the side of the bus which frequently occurs on the 30/45 bus. I see plenty of people who evade fares but you won't find me doing that. I'm not a cheapskate. I think $1.50 is a fair price to pay for my intended destination.
Many times if the bus is too full the driver asks me to hop on the side. So I hop on the side. But once the crowds leave I happily walk to your ticket machine and drop $1.50.
I wasn't impressed when the police officer stopped to check my transfer and wrote me a $50 ticket because it expired by 10 minutes. I got on the MUNI subway well before my transfer expired. I gave myself a whole 1/2 hour to get from the Mission to Downtown. But your train operators were stalling at two of the stations back-to-back for 10 minutes or so. There was something wrong because the door kept opening and closing.
I kindly explained to the officer the underground MUNI stalled at two of the stations continuously causing my transfer to expire by 10 mins. He didn't care. I asked for a first time warning and he said the rules don't allow them to give warnings. Rules are made to be broken. I wasn't cheating. Look at the other girl who also got pulled over. She couldn't even give an accurate date of birth to be considered a "youth." Her answer was '88. Seriously, that's someone who is cheating the system.
What is with your officers not explaining the difference between signing and not signing the ticket? Your officer said signing the ticket means admission of guilt and therefore protesting would render useless. So I don't sign in order to protest my rights. Your officer then writes on the ticket that "I refused to sign." I refused to sign because I was misinformed of my rights.
Look if you want to fix your transit system take a look at Portland and Austin. Also public transportation wasn't intended to be a profit-making business. There was a study conducted on public transit. It was cheaper to eliminate fares rather than upgrading machines to accept tickets, transfers and "transit card machines" that don't even work. That TransLink machine doesn't even work. It hasn't worked from its initial introduction.
MUNI lets eliminate bureaucratic waste and get back to serving the fine citizens of San Francisco OK?
Love,
Sfordinarygirl

Wow, I live in SF and haven't taken the muni since high school. I had no idea they really give you tickets for stuff like that. I believe your ticket was completely unfair.
This post really made me laugh. I guess sometimes you pay $50 stupid tax for your city's stupidity.
WOW. When I lived there 10 yrs ago, they never gave out tickets.
I have you beat.
I got a parking ticket December 26 (yep, the day after Christmas). Someone peeled my registration sticker from my license plate (I'm pretty sure it was the cop, because he/she wrote "sly" as the issuing officer). I was parked legally and my car is registered, but they wrote me a ticket for the sticker being gone. I couldn't get out of work to contest it, so the case was open and shut.
violation: failure to register or display registration
evidence: car registered to me
You can't make this crap up.
I also got a $50 ticket because the transfer expired while the muni I was in was stuck in the tunnel for 15 min for a supposedly 15 min ride to my stop. I protested the ticket by mail and now 5 months later, I received a letter said my ticket was valid. I will go to their administrative hearing next to protest the ticket. If that doesn't work, I will go to the superior court after that. I know it's cheaper to just pay the $50 but I just had it with Muni. Not only does it not run on time, constantly breaking down, drivers talking on their cell phones while driving, I am also tired of the rude manner fare paying riders are generally treated. Many working people rely on the city transportation to get to work (in a timely fashion)and we certainly pay the fares and tax to keep it running. If it needs more money (as some will inevitably like to tell us what a great deal we have and so we shouldn't complain), I suggest it consider doing some fat-trimming. I wouldn't even mind if it raises its fare if needed.
